about

You’re sitting by the fire reading that novel in which you’re never fully
engrossed when you hear a quick knock at the door. You get up to see
who it is to find your doorstep deserted but for a small envelope sealed with blood-red wax. Upon opening the envelope, you find nothing but a date, time, and address, the specifics of which are not of import, scrawled on a small piece of parchment in elaborate cursive. You have nothing to lose, you think. You are wrong.

Upon arrival, you encounter a room full of joyous partygoers, free from
the woes of life and welcoming you to their den of decadence. You
endeavor to join them and partake of the chalices thrust into your hands. In the midst of your cloudy ecstasy, a faceless man pulls you through the lightless hallway. You dismiss the whispers that dance on the edge of your consciousness.

An office. A man — Satan himself, perhaps, or someone akin. A
vermilion suit over grape-wine skin. A smile that may have registered as sinister in another life. He offers you freedom from your pain, though he doesn’t elaborate. He doesn’t need to; he’s done this all many times before. The otherworldly drinks simmer in your veins. You acquiesce. You reenter the party room, but it is not how you left it. The whispers crescendo into soulless shouts: “Help us.” You don’t even notice when you as well begin to shout as the next invitee enters through the door you no longer can traverse. Your pain is gone, but so is everything else. And he will make the same mistake that you did — they all do.

Born and raised in New York, Erin C Blake views everything as a
potential source of inspiration. She fills her compositions with the names of streets and towns that she finds while walking or driving around, providing them with newer and more magical meanings. Erin’s work is also largely influenced by fantasy; often each piece is based on an original story. She also takes inspiration from different mythologies. Erin is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree at the Jacobs School of Music, currently studying composition with Han Lash and piano with Edward Auer.
